Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of ischemic compression therapy and extracoporeal shock wave therapy on pain, range of motion, neck function and psychosocial characteristics depending on the treatment regimen in patients with myofascial pain syndrome due to inadequate work environment.

Methods : A total of 42 patients with myofascial pain syndrome participated in the study, and were randomly assigned to the ischemic compression (IC) group (n=21) and the extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) group (n=21). Ischemic compression therapy was performed in the IC group, and the extracorporeal shock wave therapy was performed in the ESWT group. Visual analogue scale (VAS), Pain pressure thereshold (PPT), range of motion (ROM), neck disability index (NDI), and fear-avoidance beliefs questionnaire (FABQ) were evaluated before and after intervention to compare the effects of intervention.

Results : Both groups showed significant differences in VAS, PPT, NDI, FABQ, Flexion, Extension, Rt side bending, and Lt side bending before and after intervention (p<.05). In addition, there was a significant difference in the IC group compared to the ESWT group in VAS, PPT, and NDI (p<.05).

Conclusion : The application of ischemic compression therapy as well as extracorporeal shock wave therapy to patients with myofascial pain syndrome can be suggested as an effective intervention method as a therapeutic approach in clinical practice.
